Monitoring caries progression by direct visual examination is particularly challenging, using a caries detection camera helps eliminate the guesswork in detecting and diagnosing tooth decay. Some caries detection units feature lasers that cause fluorescence of the tooth while others use transilluminator to see through the enamel. Some caries detection system technologies are integrated into intraoral cameras, other systems are standalone units.
